Sail away with Windstar and guests feedback

Windstar

Windstar Cruises is an award-winning cruise line that’s 180 degrees from ordinary

  • The newly transformed Star Breeze is the first all-suite Star Plus Class yacht to complete her upgrades and is now sailing in the Caribbean; scroll down to read a review from the 19 June cruise.
  • Wind Surf returned to service in early August sailing the Mediterranean. Wind Spirit has resumed sailing in Tahiti and Wind Star is delighting guests in the Greek isles.
  • While local regulations and ports of call remain fluid, guests are raving about their experience as they’re excited to be exploring in a safe environment where they are pampered and appreciated. The crew is overjoyed to welcome guests back with a big smile and a Windstar wave and these are some guest comments:

“We really loved this holiday and it exceeded our expectations. It was the first cruise after being locked down and we weren’t sure what to expect. But the crew looked after us very well and we thought Windstar pulled out all the stops to give us a good time.”–Neil

“This was our first time on a small ship and we liked the intimate, elegant old-school atmosphere. We’re thankful that it got us out again after such a long lockdown.”—Audrey

“We’re big cruise ship people. We really like that this was small and intimate. You can easily meet and mingle with people on deck. Love the opportunities to go to small ports. We loved it!”—John and Olga

“You (Windstar) are underselling your staterooms. Your online pictures do not do the cabins justice. It is so spacious and well laid out. When restraint is the only problem you have on vacation, that’s a darn good vacation.” –Robert

“I just love Windstar. I’ve been posting on my Facebook page and telling all of my friends to book vacations. Everything is incredible from our pre-cruise Cruise Tour to the cruise itself. Everything is perfect. The staff is wonderful. I love them.” –Karen

“We think Windstar did a fantastic job on our first sailing after the pandemic. Health precautions were perfect and taken very seriously by everyone.” –Monica and Thomas

Make 2022 cruise plans that will take you through Costa Rica and the Panama Canal, island hopping in the Caribbean or Tahiti, to historic landmarks and little-known places in Portugal, Spain and Morocco, or through Greece and Turkey and the tiny Corinth Canal. Or set those plans a little further out on a 2023 voyage through Japan with an extended Cruise Tour exploring Kyoto.

Windstar re-launched its Caribbean itinerary with a laidback 19 June voyage out of Saint Maarten in the Leeward Islands

Windstar is back in the water, and journalist Maria Sonnenberg details what it was like to cruise on one of the first sailings since the pandemic forced all ships to dock! This also coincided with the inaugural sailing of the newly transformed all-suite Star Breeze, so it was a doubly exciting day for both the guests and crew. Travel as the world re-opens is still fluid and constantly changing due to the current environment and government regulations, but going on a private yacht style cruise makes it totally worth it.

As a crew member of Windstar’s Star Breeze snapped photos, Audrey and Jim Speth exuberantly jumped from the cruise ship’s Watersports Platform into the liquid azure of the Caribbean.

They took the ship’s inaugural cruise after the COVID shutdown as a 35th anniversary present to themselves and were among the small but delighted group of passengers ready to get back to cruising. “We had a great time,” Audrey Speth said.

It is not surprising that Windstar, a boutique cruise line that takes pride in navigating the fascinating nooks and crannies of the world, is among the first to return to the high seas.

Cruisers familiar with the ship might not recognize the sleeker, elegant new Breeze, fresh out of an extreme makeover. Windstar did not allow its ships to languish during the pandemic, but instead made lemonade out of lemons by embarking on a major remodel of the all-suites Star Breeze, Star Legend and Star Pride, half of the company’s fleet of six yachts.

Star Breeze was cut in half by Italy’s Fincantieri shipbuilders, who also lengthened the yacht to add 50 new suites, two innovative restaurants, a reimagined spa/fitness center and an enlarged pool/deck area. Existing suites received new bathrooms, and the Breeze was decked out with new efficient engines.

The stretch brought the total of suites up to 156, a fraction of a large cruise ship’s capacity. Capacity increased from 212 guests to 312, still intimate enough for visiting small ports and hidden harbors around the world.

Windstar guest review 2

Cuadro 44, one of the new chef-curated restaurants, brings tapas and modern Spanish cuisine to the high seas, courtesy of the menu created by Anthony Sasso. The wunderkind chef is known for his groundbreaking work at New York restaurant Casa Mono, where he spent 13 years and earned the restaurant a Michelin star 10 times. His connection to Windstar Cruises began in 2018 as guest chef on a James Beard Foundation Culinary Collection themed cruise in the Mediterranean.

The “Cuadro” in the name translates to “Frame” in English. When ships are built, the vessels are mapped out in frames. The restaurant resides inside the Breeze’s Frame 44. Cuadro’s cuisine showcases the coastal areas of Spain, from the northern Cantabrian Sea to the Mediterranean, and features foodie fare such as legendary Jamon Iberico, Pulpo Gallego and Catalonian lamb chops, among others.

Stephen Raichlen of “Project Fire” fame is the impeccable grilling authority behind the menu for the al fresco Star Grill, where the focus is on innovative grilled, smoked and rotisserie fare, paired with craft side dishes and sauces.

While Star Breeze’s inaugural cruise carried its share of hiccups and even a burp or two, it was indicative of the company’s determination to get back to cruising. Docked in Philipsburg, the Star Breeze shone, sleek and crisp. Music, drinks and hors d’oeuvres were abundant at the deck party, as crew members from neighboring ships watched a sight not seen for more than a year.

Cruising in the age of COVID-19 necessitates an attitude for adventure, and a bit of a penchant for the unexpected. Requests for COVID tests, required for embarkation on the Breeze, plus mid-way through the seven-day cruise and as a farewell ritual that would allow re-entry into the United States, arrived as elegantly embossed invitations.

Windstar guest review 3

Guests must have completed a full course of the COVID-19 vaccine at least two weeks before boarding. A multi-layered sanitizing strategy includes hospital-grade HEPA filters and UV-C ultraviolet germicidal irradiation to filter and disinfect the air, plus electrostatic sprayers to sanitize all surfaces throughout the yacht.

“We were very pleased with all of the protocols that were in place for safety and cleanliness.”

Despite the changes, much remained the same, or actually better, because if medals were given for faultless service, the crew of the Star Breeze would have walked off with the gold award, smiling all the way.

“We’re so glad to have the guests back,” said Jenny, the boutique manager.

For their part, the guests were making up for lost time and didn’t miss an opportunity to bask by the pool and participate in activities such as swimming off the ship’s water sports platform.

Small ships such as the Breeze navigate in smaller — and less populated — harbors, and offer reassurance to guests skittish about mixing in with the hordes of a megaship. “The pandemic has actually helped small ship cruising,” said Steve Simao, Windstar’s vice president of sales. “People prefer not to be around crowds and the ports themselves are shy about getting large crowds of people.”

Star Breeze will transit the Panama Canal en route to Tahiti in September, where it will join one of the company’s sailing ships, Wind Spirit already cruising the enchanted South Pacific. Other Windstar yachts are sailing the Greek islands and Mediterranean.

The pandemic may well serve to showcase the charms of these well-appointed communal yachts, where guests are individuals, not just part of a huge crowd.

“This was our first time on a smaller ship, and we liked the intimate, old-school elegant atmosphere,” Speth said.  “We are thankful that they got us out again after such a long lockdown.”

Windstar continues to review and update their health and safety practices including enhanced sanitation protocols, COVID-19 vaccination requirements for all guests and crew, additional medical staff on board, and more. Crystal Expedition Cruises logo

“The unparalleled success of Crystal began with – and is still rooted in – an expressed commitment to a superior standard of excellence and level of service within the luxury hospitality industry. This standard is one that Crystal continues to raise.”

Crystal Endeavor

The Crystal Endeavor, a spacious luxury expedition yacht, debuted in July 2021. With a sleek design built to PC6 Polar Class specifications and anchor-free dynamic positioning technology, she is set to explore the farthest reaches of Earth, from Antarctica, the Russian Far East and the Northeast Passage to Japan, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand and beyond.

Curated, all-inclusive journeys span the globe to offer intrepid adventures and fascinating insights into the world’s most remote destinations. Travelling in all-suite, all veranda comfort, a mere 200 guests will be hosted by Crystal’s award-winning staff, attentive butlers, and team of expedition and destination experts. Explore with Crystal, and embark on an expedition…Where Luxury is Personal.

Antarctica, Japan, Ha Long Bay

2021

The world’s most spacious luxury expedition yacht debuted in July 2021 with a series of 10-night Luxury Iceland Expeditions circumnavigating the country round-trip from Reykjavík, followed by voyages to South America and Antarctica.

2022

The Crystal Endeavor will offer 28 voyages of nine to 19 nights, with nearly two-thirds of these classified as “Remote Expedition” sailings that will visit the High Arctic and Antarctica, Svalbard, Iceland, Greenland, the Falkland Islands, and Chilean fjords & glaciers. These designated voyages focus on the rugged and remote adventures of the destinations, with Zodiac landings, invigorating hikes, volcano explorations, wildlife observation and other bold pursuits.

The remaining itineraries comprise concentrations on “Cultural Discovery” – distinguished by an emphasis on connecting to the traditions and history of the region and its people – and “Destination Exploration” – highlighting the natural wonders and beauty of the destination. The itineraries explore the heart of Western Europe, the British Isles, Africa’s Ivory Coast, the Caribbean and the Panama Canal. All will feature expert guidance and insight into the destinations from Crystal Endeavor’s team of expedition leaders.

2023

From extreme polar regions to remote tropical isles, the Crystal Endeavor explores the world’s most intriguing destinations in 2023 with extraordinary insight. Let your inner explorer guide you in choosing the voyage that speaks to your own personal sense of adventure: Remote Expedition, Destination Exploration or Cultural Discovery.

From Antarctica and Svalbard to the Russian Arctic and The Ross Sea. Extreme adventure awaits on a Northeast Passage transit or Faroe Islands journey, while remote offshore islands tempt with the promise of rare discovery, from Brazil’s Arquipélago dos Albrolhos to Indonesia’s Raja Ampat Archipelago. Consider immersive itineraries of less-frequented Mediterranean ports throughout Andalusia, Morocco and the Côte d’Azur, or unique explorations by river to dock in the heart of Seville, Rouen and Bordeaux. Enjoy springtime in the British & Scottish Isles and autumn in Japan to see spectacular gardens awash in vibrant colour. From Kamchatka and The Kurils to the Great Barrier Reef and Tasmania.

“Every facet of Crystal Endeavor is meant to take travellers beyond their previous travel boundaries and expectations. Her exceptional design, luxury accommodations, and amenities have already set the stage for this and with her journeys, travellers have a tremendous glimpse of the grand discoveries in store for this ground-breaking yacht,” said Crystal president and CEO Tom Wolber. “Crystal Endeavor will take guests to remote destinations not typically accessible on a cruise, as well as some iconic places, albeit with a decidedly adventurous twist.”

Cruise Week report - Endeavor: Standout Aspects & Features

Dennis Nienkirk, of Texas-based Strong Travel, cruised around Iceland on the brand new Crystal Endeavor from 16 to 26 August 2021 and this is his final report highlighting three aspects:

1) The Expedition Team
The expedition crew of at least 40 very experienced guides and support personnel conduct all the shore experiences and tours. Several also give very interesting lectures.

Endeavor made eight stops, including four dockings during the island’s circumnavigation. Zodiac tours and kayaks are available in all of the tiny Icelandic towns, as are complimentary tours. Guided hikes, some lasting up to four hours, are also included. Next year two helicopters and a submarine will be aboard the Endeavor for extra cost tours ($900 per person for an hour in the sub).

2) The Captain and the Bridge
The tour of the bridge looks like something straight out of Star Trek. More than 50 large flat screens display massive amounts of information; not a piece of paper or charts anywhere – everything is digital. In addition there is a unique “bridge viewing room” in which passengers can watch activities whenever they want through a glass screen.

The bridge tour and experience is given by the captain who has been with the ship since construction began over two years ago and clearly loves his ultra high-tech vessel.

3) A Different Ambiance
Concerning the contrast between a traditional Crystal cruise and the Crystal Endeavor, the expedition angle is attractive to many veteran cruisers because it’s more adventurous and involves a more active passenger participation. Endeavor is more casual than other Crystal cruises, with many passengers not even packing a jacket.

Many of the passengers I talked with said they just wanted to “cruise somewhere;” not caring so much where the ship actually sailed, but happy to be back cruising on their beloved Crystal. They liked the unique itineraries, enabling veteran cruisers to go to places they haven’t been able to go to before. Compared to the traditional Crystal cruiser, they appeared to be in better physical condition, more intellectually curious, and more adventurous.

Live from Seabourn Ovation – What does a luxury cruise feel like right now?

We’d like to share this article from Fran Golden, a well-respected cruise/travel writer who sailed on the Seabourn Ovation at the beginning of September. She does a great job of highlighting what it’s like to sail on Seabourn now, the onboard changes and enhanced protocols, as well as the positive experience she had on board.

What Does A Luxury Cruise Feel Like Right Now?

Embarkation day on the uber-luxurious 600-passenger Seabourn Ovation, my plan was to quietly sip my complimentary Aperol Spritz around the resort-style pool, catching views of the Piraeus harbour.

Then a local trio — keyboardist, bouzouki player and singer/dancer — was onboard performing Greek hits and suddenly I was swept up, arms linked over shoulders with the dancer and two fellow passengers.

As we kicked our feet, my mind went to “Wait, COVID!” but the thought was only fleeting. This is the first luxury cruise that I’ve done since the beginning of the pandemic that feels a lot like pre-pandemic times. And that is certainly something to dance about.

How Seabourn has achieved a “normalcy” for its posh guests is by doing things a little differently.

While the 100 percent vaccinated Viking Ocean ships are requiring guests to spit daily in test tubes for PCR testing, this all-suite ship is carrying 100 percent vaccinated crew and guests with strict pre-cruise testing requirements, but less stringent onboard testing.

By virtue of being chosen for a pilot program with the Greek government, Seabourn Ovation is also offering guests a mask-free experience. The 415 crew wear masks onboard; the 230 guests onboard our sailing seemed gleeful to not have to. The mask-free program started when Seabourn returned to Greece. There have been no positive COVID-19 cases onboard, though one passenger was turned away after a positive test at the pier at startup in early July.

There are, of course, reminders we are in the midst of a pandemic. Guests, including my brother and I, arrive at the pier at assigned times so as to eliminate any congestion, present the required negative PCR test results and pass through medical screening that includes a nasal swab antigen test. Only when testing negative, and released from the holding area, are you presented with your first pour of good champagne – served on a tray by a friendly, masked waiter.

From there the experience is, well, Seabourn – extreme pampering, extraordinary cuisine, intuitive service by a crew that remembers your name, cushy hangout spaces with live music (my personal favorite is the piano bar), free flowing drinks and caviar whenever you like. Aboard Seabourn Ovation, it’s party like it’s 2019!

Seabourn OVATION lounge

Everything is not exactly as it was. There is now the welcome addition of an eMuster, where you just swipe your card with a crew member at your assigned muster station and then watch a video on the TV in your suite.

The line has also moved to an eco-friendly, less paper-focused mode, with shore excursion tickets and information about your cruise accessible on the Seabourn Source app.

Seabourn has not, as other lines have, posted signs and other social distancing reminders all over the place on the ship. But then again, spreading out has never been an issue on this class of ships, designed by noted hospitality designer Adam D. Tihany. There is open deck space for all, starting with your spacious suite’s private balcony.

It’s not hard to find a lounger at the pool, but for those who want less contact with fellow guests, the for-a-fee cabanas at The Retreat, up on top of the ship, are living room-like open-air spaces with perks that include a bottle of iced Moet Chandon and a cabin steward to fetch caviar, ice cream sundaes or whatever your heart desires.

Dining is as it has always been at The Colonnade, Seabourn’s fancy version of a buffet, where you can still serve yourself from a bountiful spread – or have the waiters bring your selections. Outdoors remains the preferred spot to do breakfast and lunch, either in the Greek sun or at shaded tables, as well as casual dinner.

Added features that encourage being outdoors include a new healthy breakfast option at The Patio poolside grill – where selections include smoothies, grain bowls and a daily egg dish served in a Moroccan tagine.

The “secret” pool area on Deck 5 behind The Club lounge has been updated to be more lounge-like, and now hosts dance parties and live music performances some afternoons and evenings. Again, adding more open-space enticement.

Guests are naturally dispersed indoors too, with four dining options nightly — The Restaurant, The Grill by Thomas Keller (of French Laundry fame), the sushi restaurant and the outdoor Earth & Ocean tasting menu experience — all impressively open even with so few guests onboard. Plus, there’s the option of course-by-course room service if you want to hang out in your spacious suite.

In the evening, some guests hit the casino, others attend show productions, some sample the Smokin’ Margarita and other craft cocktails at The Club or watch the stars out on deck.

Even when the ship carries more guests – the numbers will steadily rise to 85 percent capacity in October — spacing out should not be an issue. Ovation was created with the luxury of space in mind.

“We are looking forward to the increased capacity,” says Zoran Jacimovic, Seabourn Ovation’s hotel director. “Cruise ships need to have this energy from the guests.”

SEABOURN OVATION

The trivia contest remains fierce competition. The lecturers impress with their knowledge — on our sailing, including a Greek cultural anthropologist. Guests head to the spa for wellness sessions and massages and try to work off at least a few calories in the fitness center. It’s Seabourn as you know it.

But “bubbled” together, guests — who hail from the U.S. (151 guests), Europe, the UK and Canada — and the international crew, seem to take a little more time to get to know each other. There is a gratefulness on both sides: grateful to be traveling, grateful to be back at work.

“We all look out for each other,” says guest services manager Jo Van Biljon. “Our ship is very well protected and I like that.”

Community aside, I do find myself freaking out in the mask-free closeness whenever I hear anyone cough or sneeze. I do the same at home.

On shore excursions, we are reminded to wear masks. But on a tour of the Palace of Knossos on Crete, our guide, driver and several guests seemed to forget this on our bus ride back to the ship.

We were also encouraged to wear masks indoors when exploring the ports on our own — which my brother and I have chosen to do.

Prior to our arrival in Limassol, 23 guests who had booked shore excursions were chosen by the Cyprus Ministry of Health for a rapid antigen test. My brother was among them, so when we arrived at the port at 6:45 a.m., he was whisked off the ship and taken in a van to a port area set up as a testing center.

A day before our arrival back in Athens, all guests will be antigen tested onboard — and those returning to the U.S. will receive their required paperwork.

Meanwhile, Seabourn Ovation is a rare place where you can forget there’s a pandemic, at least for a week or two.

“We are proving we can do this in this challenging time,” says Jacimovic. “There is the sense we are on the right path.”
