River Cruises in Europe
Europe is well known for its historic waterways and a luxurious river cruise is a great way to explore the old continent by gracefully gliding through the endless maze of waterways. For example, the Danube River is a very popular cruise and has a wealth of grand baroque architecture, medieval cities, picture perfect towns and the sights that inspired the likes of Strauss and Mozart.
Sailing by river allows you to enjoy all the conveniences of traditional cruising, with all the benefits of inland travel. Stopping in multiple destinations on every trip, you’ll visit bustling cities and hidden villages, all the while only unpacking once. Even while onboard you’ll be immersed in the local sights, with ever changing views right outside your window.
Docking mostly in the centre of town, you can step right off your river boat and start exploring, independently or with expert guides. Plus, with most river cruises being all-inclusive (shore excursions too), you can enjoy your vacation without having to reach for your wallet at every turn.

Oberammergau 2022 – tours and river cruises
Oberammergau is a town in the Bavarian Alps, Germany. It’s known for its once-a-decade performance of the Passion Play in the Passion Play Theater. The House of Pilate has frescoes by Franz Seraph Zwinck and live demonstrations by woodcarvers and artists. Nearby, the Kölblhaus has a gabled roof and a painted exterior, also by Zwinck. The Oberammergau Museum features woodcarving by local artisans.
To the southeast, the Laber is a mountain with hiking trails, plus a cable-gondola that leaves from town and offers views across the valley. In the west, Kolben mountain features an open-air chairlift. South of the town is the 14th century Ettal Abbey. The abbey church has a baroque façade, designed by Enrico Zuccali. Beneath the church’s dome is an elaborate 18th-century fresco painted by Johann Jacob Zeiller. In the southwest, the French rococo Linderhof Palace is the former residence of King Ludwig II and has elaborate gardens.
Oberammergau Passion Play
The dramatic history of the Oberammergau Passion Play began with the promise of a village suffering through the Black Plague in 1632. The town’s population was so depleted by the disease that villagers vowed to perform the Passion of Christ every 10 years going forward, if only their community would be spared further loss. Amazingly, the town was indeed spared.
Since its debut in 1634, residents of Oberammergau have presented the Passion Play, a performance depicting the final stage of Jesus’ life, once every decade for a period of weeks during the summer. 2022 (postponed from 2020) will see the 42nd production of the play, which traditionally takes place on an open-air stage against a backdrop of stunning Bavarian scenery featuring world-class music and costuming. Germany’s world-famous Oberammergau Passion Play has become a beloved highlight of every decade.
